A timing belt has a predetermined life expectancy and its manufacturer will indicate that a replacement will fall due based on a time period or a mileage basis. The predetermined life expectancy does not apply to a timing chain. However, there are a number of factors which can give rise to problems. A worn or stretched timing chain can often be identified by a rattle when starting the engine from cold.
